Discover the breathtaking beauty of Lake Hallstatt by kayak on a relaxed 2-hour guided tour. Paddle past the UNESCO World Heritage town of Hallstatt, glide beneath towering Alpine cliffs, and explore the glacier-fed waters of the Winkl nature reserve.

Join us for an unforgettable two-hour kayaking adventure on the crystal-clear waters of Lake Hallstatt, one of Austria’s most beautiful and historic natural wonders. Starting and ending at Hallstatt Lido, this guided circular tour takes you on a breathtaking journey along dramatic Alpine shores, through ancient landscapes shaped by glaciers, and past the colorful, centuries-old village of Hallstatt — a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

We begin by paddling north along the lake’s western shore, gliding past Hallstatt’s historic old town where houses cling to steep mountainsides and the spire of the iconic Evangelical Church pierces the sky. As we move along the shoreline, you'll hear the story of how this village, rich in salt mining history, developed over thousands of years.

At the mouth of the Gosaumühlbach, a glacier-fed stream, we’ll pause to admire the fresh alpine waters pouring into the lake. Here you’ll learn how Lake Hallstatt was carved by ancient glaciers during the last Ice Age, creating the lake’s great depth and fjord-like character.

Crossing the lake, we venture into open waters, offering incredible panoramic views of the towering Dachstein Massif and the surrounding forested slopes. Look for fish swimming beneath your kayak and Alpine swifts darting overhead as you glide toward the eastern shoreline near Obertraun.

On the quieter east side of the lake, we explore the untouched nature of the Winkl nature reserve. Here, wetlands and reed beds create a vibrant habitat for grey herons, wild ducks, and occasionally even otters. We'll float for a moment, taking in the tranquility of this preserved natural landscape — a rare and peaceful side of Hallstatt that few visitors experience.

Paddling south along the east shore, you’ll hear fascinating stories about the hidden salt pipelines running through the mountains and the region’s unique karst geography, where underground rivers and vast limestone caves shape the land.

Finally, we make a relaxed crossing back across the lake, giving you a final, postcard-perfect view of Hallstatt — its colorful houses mirrored in the calm waters — before returning to our starting point at Hallstatt Lido.

This tour is designed for all skill levels, with a gentle pace and plenty of opportunities to rest, learn, and connect with the stunning Alpine environment. Whether you’re a first-time kayaker or an experienced paddler, this experience offers a perfect combination of natural beauty, history, and adventure.
